Hello experts,

I am about to buy an old farmstead with four economic buildings. Three of the buildings are covered with beaver tail tiles and I am wondering if and under which conditions the tiles can be reused.

What must be considered and has anyone gained experience?

Best regards
Daniel

A demand for old building materials applies even more to those that no longer exist in the same formats - at least not in those respective formats. But still, marketable materials and formats are in demand, and usually their "patina" is the feature perceived as attractive.

Since beaver tail tiles are still often used today, I basically see no difficulty in using them in new buildings. Damaged pieces can be sorted out during dismantling.

If you want to buy a farmstead, make sure that non-agricultural uses and developments are also permitted there.

You can take it without any problems. Of course, one will break more often. The important thing is that the [unterdachtechnik] must be right. Last year, we once again saved a multi-family house from demolition for our boss. On the new roof are now [bieberschwänze] from the 17th century.

Thank you,
and the land and the buildings are now approved for living and building.

Thank you very much for the quick reply. Did you clean the tiles beforehand or impregnate, glaze, or do anything else with them? Best regards Daniel PS: The under-roofing technique is of course done by a professional and based on the tiles.

I can't tell you that in detail, we have roofers for that. As far as I know, the lime was chipped off, then cleaned with a wire brush. Not impregnated or anything similar. [Unterdeckplatten] were used as the underlayment. And the stones were set in mortar.
