Yes, unfortunately. We are looking more in the northern Cologne area (Leverkusen, Langenfeld etc.) ... because the man works in the Ruhr area and I am in Cologne. And this way it’s simply too many. The plot is at least affordable here - and 1km from the S-Bahn. Hence the desperate attempt to make something useful out of it for us.

What do you mean by cramped? The house accommodates four rooms on 100m² and two levels. The floor plan is straightforward. That it would be done differently today, more spacious/open, does not justify the term "cramped". There could definitely be something made out of it.

There are quite a few "residential areas" with similar architecture here in central Thuringia. Depending on the standards, there are plenty of successful renovation/expansion projects. Demolition and new construction is only interesting if the location/situation justifies it.
