We have received an offer from a local painter & flooring company. The prices for the floors seemed reasonable to us, but those for the painting work are somewhat alarming. Of course, we will still (at least) get another offer; I just wanted to know what you think about it (rounded slightly): 1 Sanding and priming of ceiling and wall surfaces approx. 665 sqm - €2.55 - €1,700 2 Full-surface filling of ceiling and wall surfaces 1x, after drying sanding and applying deep primer approx. 550 sqm - €9 - €4,922 3 Wallpapering with smooth fleece approx. 550 sqm - €7 - €3,900 4 Sealing connections with acrylic approx. 320 m - €1.15 - €370 5 Painting ceiling and wall surfaces twice with dispersion paint NAK2 approx. 665 sqm - €5 - €3,300 -------------------------------------------- Total €14,200 net Hourly wage for additional work: €42 Invoice will be based on actual measurement (which is logical) or on hours and material records. (Material is also clear, but hours for the offer should be clearly determined based on measurement - we don’t want it to drag on 2-3 days longer later..?) Location is OWL - is this within the normal range?

Hey,

yes, we also found it shocking when we received the painter's offer :/ living in NRW:
Priming: 5,-; painter's fleece: 9,-; fiberglass: 13,-; white painting: 5,-; acrylic joints: 1.90 ... net prices - this is the average of 2 offers, one more will come next week.

We are still totally undecided about what to do now, the stairwell has to be done because we can't do it ourselves, for the rest we are considering whether to do it ourselves after all.

We never thought that wallpapering/painting would be more expensive than laying tiles ...

Point 2 is also very rarely included in regular offers? What is being fully plastered there? Is that necessary?

Point 2 sounds like a work step for Q4 surfaces. I just wonder why the painter wants to prime twice (points 1 and 2)? Also, as a rule, you can paint directly on Q4 surfaces and do not have to apply fleece anymore. Conversely, the fleece can be applied on Q3 surfaces (thicker fleece also on Q2 surfaces) to reduce surface irregularities.

The EP are okay at first. It is unclear why he is inflating it like that. Could he already see the interior plaster and the quality of the ceilings? Is that Q2? Taking the step to Q3 would then be cheaper. Or is it completely wavy and porous, then he might as well do a full surface filler because the other in between doesn’t help. I also don’t understand 2 primers. Fleece is not necessary. It is modern now, but a price driver. He could also roll twice with sto basic matt, and that’s good. It also depends on what you define as a requirement. He could also, if the interior walls are reasonably well plastered, just fill in hollows and then prime with StoSil using a wiping technique and then apply wall paint. Even cheaper. Only the surface then looks slightly sandy. You need to talk based on his EP. I think the thing can be negotiated down to 10 with reduced requirements. Karsten

Think carefully about whether you can do it yourself.

Filling/sanding is a shitty job and you should either have done it before or someone should teach you or even help you who has done it before.
The same obviously applies to wallpapering.
I also don’t understand priming twice. One coat of primer is enough, anyone can definitely do that. Primer also costs almost nothing.

Point 5 (painting) you can also do really well yourself. Do yourself and the result a favor and buy high-quality paint (e.g. Caparol Indeko Plus => 80 euros for 12.5L). Then one coat is enough.
