Rainwater cistern: Useful? Necessary? Costs?

How big is your swale-soakaway infiltration system? We currently have that too, but I am considering installing a cistern. The swale bothers us, the possible mosquito problem, and we are also not sure how suitable this option is with small children. Have you had any experience with this?

As a replacement for the [Rigole], a cistern is not suitable, but maybe you are just using the term somewhat imprecisely. What you are looking for is an infiltration shaft (approximately a cistern without a bottom). Alternatively, a real [Rigole] (i.e., an underground one) might also be an option.
