Hello people,

I have a 100m² roof terrace with an EPDM flat roof sealing and then Douglas fir boards laid floating on top.
Now I of course want to have a railing, but I don't want to just screw it onto the Douglas fir boards. At least that doesn't sound very stable to me.
What options are there to attach a railing on the outside of the house when there is 20cm wood fiber insulation on the 10cm thick BSP exterior wall?

Did I understand correctly that you have to create a positive connection between the BSP wall and the railing post using some kind of sleeves?

Greetings
Tito

I guess that from the description you don’t want to have a railing, you will probably have to have one? (as fall protection). As for the attachment, there are probably corresponding DIN standards, but: How about attaching the railing as you yourself suggested on the terrace flooring? A good prerequisite for this would certainly be a wider, sturdy "edge strip" (a thick larch wood board helped me) on or better under the boards. I once had to do it this way for lack of other options and if the area is not too large (oh, I just read 100m²… :-( ), railings mounted around the corner might possibly provide enough stiffening? So, occasionally add diagonal supports into the "terrace interior". A picture could help a lot and help many to better assess the situation and give advice better than mine

I would rather avoid drilling through the ETICS (external thermal insulation composite system) so often, but at least inform yourself beforehand with the installer of the ETICS. A well-made ETICS stays "within the system", and for that there are always suitable (expensive) solutions.

And hopefully you didn’t just turn a flat roof (that was “just there”) into a terrace without possibly ignoring the resulting clearance spaces?

Once again about your WDVS. We have a similar wall construction, and one thing you must definitely not do is let air (humidity) from outside into the wood fiber insulation. Form moisture is one thing, but the load on the railing will cause the weather-resistant layer (plaster?) to crack and become leaky, moisture will penetrate along the thermal anchors or similar, and you can watch your wall "rot away." The risk would be too high for me. The topic of the facade (tightness / connections / fastenings etc.) was discussed almost daily for a while with us (among others, at breakfast with my brother’s son-in-law, who is the master carpenter of the general contractor who built and assembled our house).

: Thank you very much for your answer. Something similar to the edge strip you described had also occurred to me. I only have concerns that the wood will rot away over time and then the whole thing will no longer be stable. Do you have a picture of your solution?

Use the Fischer thermax system for the railing. Be careful. The adhesive mortar stuff must be applied cleanly and in sufficient quantity.

My developer told me back then to simply screw a thick beam all around onto the boards and then build my wooden railing on top of that.
I was always concerned, though, that the wood might rot if wood is screwed onto wood and there is regular moisture.
Of course, that would be the easiest option for me since I can nicely craft it myself with wood.
