Hello everyone,
The handover of our house is coming up soon. We are painting and wallpapering ourselves and have already purchased the materials. Accordingly, I have binged tutorials on how it all works. One question still somehow hasn’t been answered for me, and it concerns the blessing and curse of gypsum plaster. We will prime it with the Brillux Wall Primer. And then? Can you basically put anything on after priming? I’m asking because of all these silicification processes. I know many people just paint over it with dispersion paint, but supposedly you’re not supposed to. But if you have primed beforehand?
I would appreciate your answers, thanks in advance.

We had a Q2 gypsum plaster. Of course, I filled/sanded, then primed and then applied two coats of good emulsion paint. Had no problems at all

Silicifications only work with mineral material. Gypsum is not mineral. All primers that have anything to do with acrylic, which are most of them, are essentially skin-forming. They would coat a particle that could theoretically silicify with, let's say colloquially, a very thin layer of plastic. This makes silicification impossible. So if gypsum is on the wall, it basically does not silicify. Nevertheless, one could basically stick a mineral paint onto the wall, just not through the crystal-forming process of silicification. Surprisingly, there are actually products on the market that contain both substances... and someone buys them too. I once knew a master painter who added some binder to the material to reinforce the mineral processes because he didn't quite trust the silicification. Luckily, his client who caught him didn’t realize it. If a "normal" primer is applied, it will probably contain some acrylic. The binder in the dispersion paint is also an acrylic in aqueous solution at the lower limit of dosing. Latex paint contains a bit more of it and is therefore washable. Binder is a pure acrylate in aqueous solution, which is still available in its pure form but is no longer commonly used. What is the intention of the question? The paint should not fall off the wall? ..bingewatched... Yes, such a nice find :) ... never heard of it before. Many greetings Gabriele

Of course, gypsum is mineral. If you want to paint gypsum with a silicate paint, you need an additional pretreatment. Check the instructions from the manufacturer. They have that in their program. P.S. Most interior silicate paints are dispersion silicate paints.

: your text is completely filled with half-knowledge and prejudices. Yes, gypsum plaster is not optimal for a silicate paint, but since most, as already mentioned, contain a dispersion component, it is solvable. The paint remains mold-inhibiting due to the pH value despite the organic component from the dispersion paint. Gypsum plaster alone does not mold, for example, because it is 100% mineral and 0% organic. There is nothing to mold there. Gypsum plaster simply absorbs moisture, and if a dispersion paint is applied on top and also dust (organic), you have a breeding ground.

I have earned my money for many years with mural painting, mostly with acrylic and rarely with mineral-based materials. The partial knowledge comes, among other things, from seminars by Keim, but of course also from my own practice. Each time at the FAF, more materials appeared that are supposedly jack-of-all-trades and for which you supposedly don't need any skills or knowledge, or that can replace several layers with a single application. That does not impress everyone to the same degree. As far as the chemistry is concerned, I would bet my life on it. Surely you are also an expert, Michert. Thank you for your criticism. Please take a closer look. It is worth it. Best regards Gabriele
