My opinion on fencing: Fences are so 1950s... If at all, then small walls or bushes. Especially in new development areas, everything is usually left open or only with very subtle indications of property boundaries. And then it looks stupid when your own property is suddenly fenced in...

With a child and dog, fences are very useful, and they can also look nice.

Yes, and when various scavengers come visiting at night, a game fence isn’t bad either. Last night the fox was here (he fits through the fence), sat right in front of our door and screamed at the top of his lungs. You’d think someone was being murdered. I then politely asked him to scream somewhere else. He looked at me like, "Are you stupid or what?" but then he trotted off anyway. Nice big animal. :)
