Hello everyone, our house is slowly taking shape and we are considering how to design the walls. Originally, we thought about applying felt plaster to the walls. However, our site manager advised against it. Regarding the expected settlement cracks, he recommended covering the walls with painter's fleece and then painting them. Does anyone have experience with this?

Hi,

you probably mean a troweled plaster, again probably a troweled lime-cement plaster. Where is the problem supposed to be? Of course, it won’t be baby-poster-smooth but has a somewhat rougher appearance. We have now lived for 5 years in a new building with troweled lime-cement plaster at quality level Q2 and there were no cracks. In the new house, we did it the same way again. Troweled lime-cement plaster in Q2 and simply painted, and the job is done. Looks good, doesn’t have the sterile look of a perfectly smooth wall, and if you want to fix a small damage, no one will notice. Perfect for us.

Best regards,

Andreas

I know two new buildings from 2016 (completed in Q1 and Q2 respectively), one with a Filzputz as described here and one with glass fleece wallpaper. On the first, you can clearly see cracks today at the ceiling/wall junction. On the second, these cracks are not visible (possibly there are cracks, but they are covered by the glass fleece). Personally, I just don't like plastered walls; they are too rough and too hard for me.

simply just scraped off?!? I’m lazy, it amazes me that something like this is still done in new buildings nowadays, just like a colleague who wallpapered with woodchip, none of it would be my thing. We had Q4 fully plastered and over it comes white or colored painter’s fleece

We have pure lime plaster and white lime paint over it. I am not discouraged by cracks (here fine hairline cracks at corners where the ceiling meets) just a bit of paint on the brush, over it, done. Besides, I am the only one who sees these hairline cracks. I don't want anything on the walls that seals them hermetically.... uaaa THAT is dreadful to me.
