Unfortunately, there are also forestry officers (with the emphasis on -officers) at the "zuständigen Landesbetrieben". Apart from books by Mr. Wohlleben, there are also dozens of podcasts that will give you a pretty good understanding of the subject of trees. And: yes, he has a forestry district to manage and can't sneak away to autograph sessions ;-)

King Wilhelm planted 5000 mammoth trees in southern Germany in 1850. Currently, about 200-300 of them still stand, approximately 40 in the [willhelma] in Stuttgart ;) Height about 30m.

Just as a reference for how they grow in Germany.
