We only have the bubble wrap, which I believe creates a maximum of 1 cm of air between the plaster and the wall. That doesn't really bother anyone - nobody looks there anyway?! I would just avoid pouring in any gravel or sand, so that the purpose is maintained.

The crack doesn't really bother, and nobody looks there either, but leaves get stuck in it. That's why you should pour something in there.

It depends on which way you lay the studded membrane. Studs facing the house wall, I would advise against filling the joint. If you lay the studs towards the pavement, you can fill it with grit. But I can only agree with the others that a 1cm joint really doesn’t stand out.

that is indeed a very debatable topic
with us, the dimpled membrane was installed both ways
I had never noticed it before either

but where I’m going to install it again because of the gap, I will probably orient the dimples away from the house so that the gap is narrower or faces the gravel.
