Hello house construction forum members,

if I have 120 sqm of living space, I also need 120 sqm of parquet, of course including waste, or am I wrong here? The floor area is what counts, right?

Thanks for your advice!

Depends on which standard/regulation your "living area" was calculated. You will hardly want to cover the approximately 50% LA of your terrace with parquet. But the part under your stairs, which does not have a height of 100 cm and is therefore often not included in the LA, you better not leave out, because such a "hole" looks pretty stupid...

Hello Peter. If I now answer "You are right," it should still be taken with caution. Not because I am writing this (and have no idea), but it depends on whether deduction areas (such as walls, etc.) have already been subtracted or smaller radiator niches (which are also covered) have been taken into account. Furthermore, it depends on the room geometry, whether the doors (and thus the door frame) open inward or outward. And finally, to confuse you completely, the parquet measurement must be considered. Due to the required waste, it is important and decisive whether one wants to lay long planks or a mosaic parquet with a cube pattern. Solution: Each room must be measured individually to create a measurement plan. This is not absolutely necessary, but it may save you a trip to the parquet dealer to either reorder material – or return it. Both are unpleasant and can be prevented by measuring the area of each room! Good luck: KlaRa

too late

But thanks for the info. We have 70 sqm downstairs and 50 sqm upstairs, which is why I assume that all slopes and niches upstairs have been deducted. Let's see what happens.

You may be right or not. Calculate the floor area of the rooms plus waste. That is easier.

It also depends heavily on the room sizes... we have a very winding old building with slanted walls and before ordering, like with tiles, we drew a complete installation plan to figure out how best to distribute the 190cm long floorboards in order to minimize waste and achieve a nice overall look (continuous, etc.). It was real Tetris.

It was also very practical during installation; each cut end was numbered and you knew where it was needed again. Lots of effort, but minimal waste and relaxed installation under absolutely suboptimal room conditions.
