The question is how far this brightness should extend. Is it enough for you to have a brightly lit path or do you also need a few meters of visibility around you for your sense of security? That then determines the sizing and positioning of the light sources.

Basically, outdoor lighting makes sense if it only turns on when needed to avoid unnecessary light pollution – whether by switch, remote control, timer, motion detector, or a combination of these.

There are no motion detectors that only recognize humans – but it can be set how large a moving object must be to trigger a switching operation.

A friend who is afraid of being attacked in front of his house bought a night vision device and keeps it in his car. This way he can see without being seen – at least that is the reassuring idea for him. Fear is often irrational. What advice can one give?
