Oil heating is available, should one rather convert to gas for better performance?

Gas is largely heating energy in the residential sector. Oil is much more. Chemical basic material, raw material for fuels, only to a smaller extent still heating energy. I guess, if there were a switch in engine construction due to emissions to natural gas engines, the gas price would skyrocket. But since the focus is on electric cars, I rather fear for the electricity price. Oil tends to be rather stable/decreasing due to weak demand. Karsten

If the tanks are still OK, there is nothing economical than keeping the heating system. Then I would try to switch to surface heating if future orientation is really the issue. Then there is the possibility to use any heating technology when the oil heating dies.

Yes, admittedly I am not a professional now, but intuitively I would claim that with the rising oil prices. Because in the past it has been very expensive from time to time. But as I said, I am happy to be proven wrong.

So I want to explain it to you differently: you have a paid-off heating system in the basement. A new gas heating system costs at least(!) €7000. You can figure out when a gas heating system pays off with whatever forecast. And: if the oil price explodes in five years, you can still switch then. I don't understand the pressure.

And not only that. The gas still has to get into the house first.
