Dear forum community, I have a problem that is driving me crazy. I have a chimney in my house (first occupancy 2017) because I would like to have a wood stove in my living room someday. The financial means are not there yet, and yes, I know that a wood stove in a new house makes little sense, but I would still like to have one eventually.

Now birds have discovered the chimney as a playground. At first it was the ravens, now the wagtails are active up there from sunrise to sunset, pecking, knocking, hammering away. The noises come through rather muffled on the ground floor, and since you usually have something to do, it’s not so noticeable. But upstairs the chimney runs through the children’s room, where my 7-month-old son and I sleep. There the noises are extremely loud and cause the little one to have trouble falling asleep, and when he does sleep longer, I wake up because of the birds. When I open the attic hatch, they fly away and stay away for about an hour, then they’re back again. I’m attaching a picture to show the chimney (and the birds’ droppings).

Does anyone here have any idea how I can get rid of the birds? I would really be grateful for any advice!

[*]Get a cat and give it the opportunity to climb onto the roof.
[*]Attach an artificial plastic bird (raven or hawk or something like that) on the chimney.
[*]Attach a wind chime with reflective elements.

Perhaps it is enough to install a wind monitor nearby?

Thanks for the ideas! The house just has 2 full floors and a shallower gable roof, so the cat is already out of the question. The birds have their peace thanks to the height of the house. Where would I need to attach a wind chime or a weather vane? I took the photo quickly just now.

Attach a small cover made of chicken wire and then you will have peace for the time being. Once the chimney is there, you can take it from there. The chimney is probably the highest point far and wide and therefore a great place for birds.
