Hello everyone,

my wife and I started building our own house last year. A friend pointed out to me that I have to install a water filter system in a new building. My question about this: Do you have any experience with it? Does the filter have to meet special requirements? My thought is: If I have to install the thing anyway, then I might as well do it properly and get a water filter that can really filter out all contaminants. (possibly offspring) I would be very happy about ideas, suggestions, and just some advice!

Greetings from Ostwestfalen,

Christian

It is only there to filter out suspended particles and grains of sand. In my opinion, nothing more is needed. German drinking water is among the best monitored worldwide.

Thanks for the quick response! Since we're already on the subject, I did a quick research on drinking water yesterday. Although the water quality in Germany is really good, I am a bit worried when it comes to microplastics and nitrates because the property is relatively outside near fields. Especially when it comes to my children, I am concerned about the nitrate contamination. I have researched various drinking water filter systems and am a bit overwhelmed by the selection. What do you think about it? Can you recommend something to me?

Do you have/get your own well? If not, you get your water from the waterworks, and that can be many kilometers away. Every waterworks offers you the possibility to find out the water values, usually even online, just look up your responsible one and check. If yes, you need a well builder anyway who builds a system tailored to the water for you.

Which contaminants is your water actually burdened with? Then you can make an informed decision - which will probably conclude that you do not need a water filter.

Another example from myself (renovation of a two-family house from the 60s): As part of the pipe renewals, I addressed my plumber about a water/backwash filter. He (as well as a second supplier) said that they would like to make money, but do not actively recommend it with normal water quality.

I would also like to throw into the ring that one can protect oneself too much. Children who do not come into contact with dirt could tend to develop allergies more easily and be sick more often.
