Hello,

we have filigree ceilings in our new building and are now considering how to finish the ceilings.

We have the choice between painter’s fleece and painting or a very fine-grained spray plaster.

My husband thinks the spray plaster is too coarse and believes it looks dumb if the ceiling and walls are almost the same. Therefore, we are thinking about doing it with the painter’s fleece. Then it will be quite smooth.

What do you think?

Are there advantages and disadvantages to both methods and what would you do?

Which is more high-quality?

Regards
Ivonne

But that is a normal appearance, that walls and ceilings are plastered and look the same. However, a lot can still be done with paint.

There are no important special advantages or disadvantages, nor is it "higher quality." There are also plenty of plastered ceilings that are wallpapered. These are two different approaches depending on the preferences of the builders.

Hello,

So if the option is to plaster properly, in my opinion there are indeed differences. 1. Ceilings will settle over time, causing cracks to appear. The plaster cannot absorb these and will also show a crack. 2. Painter’s fleece can easily bridge the minor cracks. 3. My choice: properly fill the ceiling joints, fill already existing cracks and pores, smooth it out properly, apply fleece, and paint.

Best regards, Jann

That’s also how our painter suggested it. We are also not using a very thin/smooth fleece. Especially upstairs where the wooden ceiling is, a somewhat textured fleece. He said if we’re lucky, there won’t be such bad settling cracks.

Thank you very much for your answer. That's how we will do it now as well.

One option would also be to paint the ceiling with so-called Szreichputz. I quite like that and have used it both with 2mm quartz sand and with 1mm. Therefore, I would always choose 1mm because it is easier to spread. If you apply it in a kind of cross stroke or whatever it’s called, it has a nice grain even without glaze and looks modern. It also more easily forgives mistakes or visible edges, etc. We always had the 1mm from Haering, which I find great and easy to use. Painting fleece is just as good and in my opinion makes no real difference, maybe in cost, which would then be my deciding factor.
