Have you ever experienced that? A long-standing gap in the buildings is developed and suddenly the neighbors are horrified about the block that takes away their sunlight, blocks the free view, or otherwise disturbs them. It is normal when you have gotten used to the gap over many years. But who has experienced that and how did you deal with it?

Well, something is being built there that wasn't there before... some neighbors would like to have a say. But usually, they cannot.

What is important: comply with applicable law and offer little to no grounds for complaint. Always be nice and friendly.

we were scared. In front of us [XXXXXXXXXL Grundstück], really. Big family, money is no object. They had a valid building permit for the children and wanted to develop and rent out a corner until the children come of age. That fell through, they didn't want strangers on the property (and financially it wasn't necessary either).

I would be interested to know if a building permit expires whether you can still submit it again and what then happens.

So in Bavaria the direct neighbors have to sign the building application. Therefore no one should be surprised. The only problem is if a small street or path is in between. But in that case you should simply talk to the neighbors before building, which unfortunately is no longer a given nowadays...

Not to cause confusion. In Bavaria, for a project requiring approval, the owners of the neighboring properties must be presented with the site plan and the building drawings for signature. If they do not sign, this has no effect on the granting of the building permit. So in Bavaria they do not have to sign. For a project exempt from approval, the neighbors only need to be notified of the construction project.
