Hello everyone,

the roofing is about to start and I want to use the scaffolding to place a leaf guard in the gutters. They will probably come at the end of next week, at the latest the week after, and the carpentry told me that it is a 6-part gutter.

I have now found out that the nominal size is 333mm (which means nothing to me), the diameter is 153mm. What is important for me is to know which leaf guard I can use. What is meant by nominal widths 80mm, 100mm and 125mm?

Or what do you think about integrating as a leaf guard?

Our neighbor once had a deciduous tree quite close to the house, and therefore a lot of leaves fell into our gutter every autumn. So we bought some leaf protection grids made of plastic with plastic fasteners. They were easy to install and worked well. The only annoying thing was that when snow slid off the roof, it tore off the fasteners, so every year we had to grab the ladder to reattach the grid.

So make sure to get something more stable.

There are also grids that are inserted at the top of the downpipe. I don’t have these myself, but I don’t see them as very advantageous if many leaves accumulate there and the water can no longer flow away. That again means taking the ladder and cleaning.

I could imagine that leaf separators installed about 0.5 or 1.0 meters above the ground in the downpipe are a better solution.

Why don’t you just measure and then buy a protector from one of the well-known online retailers? Are there even any trees nearby that would make it worthwhile to install such a protector? Otherwise, you can simply do it later when you see where a significant amount of leaves actually fall into the gutter.

We have plastic grids that click into place. They don’t look very nice aesthetically, but luckily I don’t look at the gutter that often. If they ever break, I will use those round grids because you can’t see them from below.

We have a downpipe guard. The gutter is cleaned 3-4 times a year under the trees, not much less on the street side. Coffee cups, baker's bags, cigarette boxes, etc. regularly clog there. I keep wondering how that stuff gets up there. We have a gutter cleaner with a telescopic handle from Fiskars. It works without a ladder. We were advised against a leaf protection grid. I can't remember the reason anymore.

Lol, you have coffee cups and cigarette boxes in the gutter? It must be a 'lively' area.

Well, the town center, basically. By 6 p.m., at the latest 7 p.m., it gets lonely. Haven't seen anyone since 5 p.m. I think it's because of the stairs that run past the property.
