Hello everyone,

our future house is indeed located on a meadow, but the grass growing there is rather coarse now (I believe it used to be a pasture meadow). What is the best procedure after the house is completed? Does the old topsoil need to be replaced, or can you simply sow new grass on the existing soil? If so, how do you remove the old grass?

And can this be done easily as a DIY project, or do I need an excavator, low-loader, and manpower for this?

Best regards

Remove the old lawn completely, put new topsoil on, and lay the lawn anew. Carefully dig out every single newly growing weed :) This works great with a spade and a bit of manpower (or womanpower), it always depends on the area we're talking about. A wheel loader, excavator, or other equipment naturally make the work much easier.

Hi,
Excavators, wheel loaders and so on probably depend on the size.
Isn’t it enough to just dig over once, rake smooth, lay new lawn and mow regularly?

It depends on whether you want a lawn or a meadow. For us, it is impossible to establish a weed-free lawn ourselves because the new development area used to be millet fields and the seeds are extremely persistent.
Only turf remained.

Hi, well, I don't need a golf lawn, but also not an extreme weed field. Turf would probably be a really good solution. It's probably just a matter of cost. Olli

Rolled turf is the simplest and most promising. Please leave some space next to the lawn in the garden for nature and native species.
