What do you mean by "if you want to buy something once in a while"? There are certainly shops here, and several small towns are even closer, so you don't always have to go to one of the mentioned cities for various little things, and if you want to go on a more extensive shopping trip, a maximum of 45 minutes is probably acceptable.

Off the top of my head, I can think of

    [*]Pharmacy, doctors
    [*]Hardware store
    [*]Bicycle shop
    [*]Computer store
    [*]Electronics stuff like Conrad
    [*]Stuff for any hobby

Basically everything that the nearest supermarket and clothing store don't have.
Without a car, you are lost.

Yes, currently you still need cars in rural areas. By the way, an e-bike is a great way to extend your range even if it’s hilly. In case of illness, there’s always someone in a good neighborhood who helps.

If I’m tired and want peace, I don’t want to have to drive somewhere first.
If I’m awake and want action, I also have the energy for it.

Everything walking distance except retreat? Then rather 30 minutes to Cologne Cathedral (or another city).

By now, everything is delivered the next day. I myself live rather "urban," but thanks to Amazon and others as well as the possibility of working from home, I see a trend reversal in the future.

Honestly, for hobbies you order everything online anyway, I haven't bought clothes locally for a long time because it's expensive or the right size isn't available, I would miss a hardware store.

Okay, going out in the evenings I find harder, I would miss the variety.
