Hello everyone.

How high does a knee wall have to be at least so that normal windows can be installed on the eaves side in the upper floor (gable roof).

Thanks in advance.

Depends on whether it should be as high as a normal window and how the roof overhang is. It doesn't make sense if you look directly at the underside of the roof from the window. We stopped at 1.50m knee wall height. That would have only resulted in very narrow windows or windows that would be quite deep. I think from 1.80 - 2.0m you can definitely get decent windows in there.

Thank you for the response. We would like to be able to install proper windows if anything. Lead time. Does anyone know anything more specific?

We are currently dealing with the topic as well, have a knee wall of about 1.6m. Too small for normal windows, but having only roof windows everywhere is not the wish and the costs with external roller shutters are not insignificant

can you answer the question about Vorlauf? You should be familiar with it, right?

At least I hope so

There are three possibilities:

01. either install dormers and then floor-to-ceiling window elements within them
02. everything above 2.01 window measurement + 0.30 m casing for the roller shutter box => a total of 2.30 m. But then you might as well build a two-story building
03. or window elements that extend over the knee wall like roofing. Then the knee wall height is almost irrelevant

Edit: I have to correct myself; there are 4 options. You can also install a "retractable balcony," provided it would be approved according to the development plan.

Best regards from the Rhineland
