Thank you very much. That helps me a lot! I also thought that a step that is too short is ultimately a defect. And also that the silicone can never be removed from the pores of the wood.

What should happen with the wall? Wallpaper + paint? Then I would completely remove the silicone joints and have them replaced with acrylic, which can then be painted cleanly. A reasonably decent painter will do that noticeably better than the attempts shown here.

The wall will be painted by the painter in the end. However, the core problem remains: the silicone is in the wood, i.e. the fat in the pores.

That looks bad . How big are the gaps under the silicone seal? In my opinion, that is not tolerable. The silicone must come off. I would not put silicone or acrylic between the wall and the stair steps. Both will look awful after a few years, even if you keep painting over them. If the gaps are not too big, I would leave them as they are. Alternatively, use wipe-on or small triangular strips. Unfortunately, we faced the same decision. Our steps are also partly not completely straight. The consideration was actually either silicone, acrylic, or fine triangular strips. We ultimately left it as it was and are glad about it. If the gaps are not too big, you won’t notice them after a few months.

Oh yes, it’s brutal. :-(
In the end, many steps were simply cut too short and now there is an attempt to "fix" that with excessive silicone. We are absolutely not fans of wiping moldings. The question is ultimately what can still be done about it. This is never acceptable as it is.

So we had a number of steps that were too short replaced. The craftsman was not happy, but he realized that it wouldn't work like that either.
