Hello everyone,

we are currently building a house and want to do the painting work ourselves. The builder pointed out that sealing the joints between ceiling and wall (both on the ground floor and the upper floor) is part of the painting work. Our interior walls are all solidly built at the top and bottom. Only on the upper floor are the sloping roofs and ceilings covered with drywall.
What or which material should I use to seal these joints? Is this work done before or after wallpapering? What else should be considered?

Thank you very much for the help!

Hello Flobi,

you can seal the joints with (Maler)Acrylic, when connecting ceiling <--> wall on the upper floor you should make sure that the builder installs a separating strip, otherwise the joint will crack unevenly again.
Before painting over the acrylic, feel free to wait a few days, it still shrinks a bit and otherwise you will have cracks there as well.

Regards,
Sebastian

Joint? If walls/ceiling have been plastered, there is no joint. At some point, settlement cracks may appear, but that is another matter.

Between the drywall and the wall, I would use acrylic to fill narrow gaps before wallpapering and painting, as acrylic can be painted over, unlike silicone. If you use filler in these spots instead, there is a risk of cracks forming. The risk of cracking might be reduced by embedding mesh tape, but I do not know if that would be done properly. It probably also depends on the width of the gap and the underlying structure.

In our turnkey house, no painting work was included either. Nevertheless, all transitions between drywall/brick were sealed with acrylic (we also have drywall walls on the upper floor). Nevertheless, these crack. According to the construction manager, these are not settlement cracks but a completely normal phenomenon because the wall cladding (including ceiling cladding) and the roof structure move. The grouting specialist said we would only have final peace after two years (two cold and heating periods). He advised us to install decorative moldings made of styrofoam. Of course, we did not do that, but we are curious to see to what extent the transitions will crack (despite the acrylic).

Thank you very much for the numerous and quick responses!
We were also surprised that these works do not belong to drywall construction but to painting work. But presumably every developer does it differently.
We will then stock up on some cartridges of acrylic and follow your recommendations. If I fill the joints before wallpapering, will the application of the wallpaper still succeed without "bulges" at the acrylic edge?

Best regards!
