Is an automatic garden irrigation system without a cistern worthwhile?

Hello,

I am currently considering whether we should install an automatic garden irrigation system for our 200m² garden.
150m² of it is lawn.

I haven't even included the terrace.

We do not have a cistern installed.

Would it even be worthwhile to water the garden with drinking water using an automatic irrigation system?

Or should we water the garden specifically with a garden hose?

You don't have to water the lawn at all. The watering is mainly for appearance, but nothing more. And for the rest, you can easily use the garden hose as needed. But: With automated watering, not necessarily more water flows through the pipes. It is watered differently if necessary (drip irrigation overnight or the like). Whether that justifies the cost? You have to decide.

Yes, I also believed that you don't have to water the lawn even during prolonged dry periods

ok I also think that the approximately 30m long flower bed can be watered by hand with the garden hose (we have a Gardena Rollup Box)

the automatic irrigation is quite a big effort and it is not cheap either

Morning,

Well, a flower bed is quite simple if you already have a water line there: just put in a drip irrigation hose and an irrigation controller (there are also battery-operated ones). You can get pretty far with 200-300 euros and save yourself from watering the bed for hours every day. It’s also much more water-efficient. It’s best to spread wood chips (not bark mulch) in the bed to protect the soil from drying out.

Irrigation systems for the lawn are an endless discussion. We have one, and I wouldn’t want to do without it anymore. It’s quite dry here, and I don’t feel like looking at a completely brown lawn for three months every year. The kids wouldn’t survive that either.

The "missing cistern" is not a big deal; it’s nonsense here with us anyway. Several neighbors have one and they all say that from May/June it’s almost always empty anyway and they have to water almost entirely with drinking water.

Best regards

Unfortunately, we only have a cold water connection at the house on the terrace

we want to extend the terrace around the house to the back of the garage.
There is also the cold water connection

So now we only have the option to lay a hose or pipe under the terrace to make automatic watering possible at all.

or we just water with the garden hose, it doesn't take hours anyway

In front of the house we have to water by hand or with the hose anyway, because we don't have a water connection there

With automatic irrigation, you can water more evenly, more sparingly, and at the right time. Lawns need about 10-20 liters per m2 per week. It is also much more convenient. Lawn irrigation is not necessary at all. Then it just turns brown and dies. All the money for the system etc. wasted. For 150m2, you can also use sprinkler hoses. Attach an irrigation timer so that watering takes place early in the morning.
