Is a pump necessary for the drainage of light wells?

Hello,

we need to let our surface water infiltrate. Our architect said that a pump would be necessary for the drainage of the light wells. That sounds a bit exaggerated to me. I could let two basement windows drain into the adjacent soakaway pit and the other (and last) light well from a small basement window into the perimeter drainage (which ultimately also ends in the soakaway pit).

Does it really have to be a pump?

if your downspouts lead into the soakaway well, it can sometimes be full during heavy rain and then the water is pushed back into the basement light wells and through the basement windows into the basement. A classic, the water in the basement comes from your own roof. Water does not always flow in the intended direction, it can also flow backwards
