Hello,

our single-family house is currently being built. Today and tomorrow the roof is being covered. Under the roof tiles, an underlay membrane is being installed.

Now I have a question about the attic: The attic is uninsulated. The rafter fields of the roof slopes and the ceiling areas on the upper floor will be insulated with mineral wool mats. Under the mineral wool mats, a plastic foil is planned as a vapor barrier. The cladding will be done with plasterboard panels.

The attic is unheated (cold roof) and is ventilated via the ridge.

We want to use the attic as a storage room. Now I am not sure whether it should be insulated or not. Is insulation worthwhile? If yes, what should be used as insulation?

Thank you very much

Hello!

So - according to the usual construction descriptions, the primary problem usually lies elsewhere. The upper floor ceiling is usually insulated in such a way that insulation, mostly mineral wool, is applied in the attic. This is of course not walkable. The standard typically only provides for partial covering with tongue and groove boards.

Regarding the insulation of the roof: An insulated room must also be able to be heated, otherwise all the warm and moist air in the room condenses there and cannot be discharged. There are great pictures of mold growth on the WWW!

Regards,
Tomtom.

Thank you for the response.

The standard does not provide for a base at all.
The base is own work. What is best suited here?

Hello!

I had a screed applied - but of course that is not possible with a wooden beam ceiling.

Once the upper floor ceiling is installed, you won’t be able to work with OSB boards anymore - so really only tongue and groove boards remain. Alternatives are more likely with the floor covering: I would only lay PVC on partial areas to avoid problems with vapor diffusion. Carpet is likely to become musty. Laminate would be nonsense. Leaving the tongue and groove boards raw or glazing them might still be an option.

Regards, Tomtom.
