Good morning everyone!
I am currently planning to build a somewhat larger photovoltaic system on my house (location NRW).

Since the utility room is already well occupied by the washing machine and dryer, the boiler, network technology, etc., and above all is well "heated", and additional wall space is also scarce, the installation of the inverters (one for full feed-in and one for surplus feed-in) was planned in the garage directly adjacent to the utility room.
The waste heat from the inverters would not be noticeable in the garage in summer and would not cause problems in winter.

There is already a sub-distribution board in the garage where the 5 x 16 supply line for the garage’s electrical system is connected.

The cable route from the meter cabinet to the inverter is approx. 3-4 m; pulling an additional cable for the full feed-in inverter would not be a problem.

Now my electrician told me that he sees a problem with installing the inverters in the garage.
Garages are fundamentally intended for parking cars, and in his opinion, at most a wall box may be installed there, but nothing more.

I could not find anything about this topic in the VDE. Only from the area of building law was I aware of something concerning the use of garages, but that should not be the electrician’s issue...

Furthermore, I have already read several times that electricity storage units are installed in garages due to the possible fire load. Even if this is not initially planned here, that would also contradict the intended use of the garage.

Do you perhaps have some further information on how to assess the electrician’s opinion?

My photovoltaic installer did that without any issues. I have both the inverter and the storage unit in the garage.

However, many inverters are also suitable for outdoor use. That might be something to consider if it really doesn’t work in the garage.

I’m glad the inverter is not installed in the house/utility room/HAR. The fan is quite loud in the summer.

To my knowledge, there are no regulations opposing it. Proper installation assumed (fire protection, VDE standards, WR designed for possible temperatures - frost in winter and heated garage in summer, etc.).

For the inverter and the storage, there are datasheets with the permissible operating temperatures, which are also relevant for insurance purposes. In a garage, -20 degrees can be just as possible as +40 degrees. One of our neighbors has the inverter and the storage installed outside on the house and told me upon inquiry that they are the only ones who can do that (were a bit more expensive).

Thank you for the feedback. I am firmly convinced that the ambient conditions in my garage are better suited for the WR than in the utility room. In winter it does not freeze and in summer it does not get too warm yet. The humidity should also be lower than in the utility room with a running condenser dryer. I will speak with the electrician again.

Hi - go for it! It was also planned in our utility room, directly behind the living room. Since the utility room was already quite full and I also didn’t really feel like dealing with the noise and heat right next to the living area, we banished it to the garage 15m away. WR and battery. Best decision ever!
