Hello again.

We are considering how to design our access path to the house. I have attached the proposal from the general contractor based on the drawings. We have freedom in the design, our development plan leaves us free rein. The proposal from the general contractor foresees having the access path run entirely over the carport. Personally, I would like to give our beautiful front door a bit more attention. I am now thinking about whether the access path could be made somewhat like in my second picture (sorry, I am bad with Paint^^). Do you have any ideas / suggestions? Visually, I would prefer a slightly curved path, which fits nicely with the Frisian country house. I would probably not plant any, or at least no particularly tall, shrubs in front of the house (as in the first proposal), so that the view of the house from the street is not obstructed. Perhaps I would plant along the edge of the walkway if we do it like in the second picture. Do you have any other ideas on how to solve this completely differently?

Best regards

Make a mixture of both. I think the direct connection from the carport to the front door is good and practical. And instead of the strict straight geometry, you can create a curved edge.

I would definitely keep the direct access from the carport to the front door - at the latest when the kids are around and reach a certain age, the risk is that if such a direct connection does not exist, a dirt path will develop. And I wouldn’t find that very appealing.

I would also move away from strict geometry towards curved shapes (Attention! Most garden landscapers don’t necessarily like this because it requires more work than laying straight edging boards!). We didn’t pave anything in the front yard but covered it with so-called gravel (small, round stones). That would be a possibility: pave the driveway, gravel the path to the house (the gravel is spread over a specially prepared sub-base: first gravel, then crushed sand, which is compacted, and on top comes the gravel). Advantage: it doesn’t need fixed edges like paving stones, so you have much more freedom with the edge design. Combined with perennial flower beds around or possibly a small round flower bed in the middle of this area, slightly elevated, with a small tree and ground cover that blooms. You could also make the border wide enough to maybe sit on it for a little chat or so.
But no direct access path to the house will eventually annoy you yourself. Think about how it goes when you come back heavily loaded from shopping or with a screaming toddler in your arms or whatever.
