Hello everyone,

a brief background...
Years ago, we were given a Malm bed measuring 160 x 220 cm.
Now we have separated and I ordered a 140 x 220 cm mattress for my new bed and would ideally like to buy a MALM bed again.
I am aware that Ikea has discontinued the 220 cm beds (for whatever reason), and even on order no corresponding MALMs are being made anymore. And the only reachable IKEA in the Netherlands naturally has nothing in stock either. This, in my opinion, rather customer-unfriendly business policy obviously makes it difficult for me to purchase the MALM bed.

... and now to the topic:
I have now considered buying a normal 140 x 200 cm MALM and extending it.
My wish is that the extension is done so cleverly that it is hardly noticeable.

Has anyone here had experience with a bed extension or even extended one themselves?
Can someone possibly give me tips? I am grateful for any answer!
I feel like I have searched half the internet and unfortunately found nothing.
Best regards
Marv

The 220 cm bed size was always a special size at IKEA. This eventually disappeared due to lack of demand. IKEA works with mass production, so a custom-made product (which you probably wouldn’t want to pay for anyway) is simply not possible. For this reason, thankfully, carpenters are not yet obsolete!

I can only agree with Ikeaner - IKEA thrives on products that can be produced and sold in large quantities. If instead of 1,000,000 beds only 1,000 of a series were sold, the price would more than double and the entire pricing policy would be disrupted. Regarding the conversion of the Malm bed: basically, you would only have to replace the 4 side parts. The cross-section of these is relatively irrelevant, as long as the drillings are in the same place to connect them with the headboard and footboard of the original bed and the parts are stable enough (bending resistance). Depending on the color of the bed, even simple wooden slats could perhaps be used, which can gain an appealing look by good sanding of the surface. A carpenter with fair prices should be able to make these parts for 50 - 100 EUR. With painting or special wood or decor, the whole thing will of course become correspondingly more expensive. But even if you include the price of the Malm bed, this is an incredibly cheap price for a bed with a special size.

Somehow it doesn't surprise me that in an Ikea "fan" forum, no constructive answers and tips are given, but only justifications and admiration for the Swedish company are promoted.

I don't understand what is so difficult about answering a simple question.
In all other forums, those who have nothing constructive to say keep "..."

Take care, you fan(atics)

No one is being insulted here, please.

Thank you

Maybe because many here are fed up with the constant senseless and pointless shouting?
And ranting here will surely get you plenty of help.

What do you expect from a forum called IKEA FANS??

What do you expect? Ikea has a program that is tailored to demand... I only sell as many slow movers as necessary in my store as well. On the other hand, Ikea stands for creativity. It’s basically encouraged to combine everything, hang curtains in front of shelves, put kitchen wall cabinets in the bathroom and and and... So if you’re missing 20 cm of bed, I would take a look at the two end pieces, try to get suitably thick woods at the hardware store, saw them to size and drill the holes. If you’re missing the appropriate screws, you can go to the Ikea spare parts counter and get whatever you want. Even easier would be if you just buy a 2nd used bed on Eb** or somewhere else (it only needs to be the 90 one) and then saw off the corresponding parts there. If you now tell me that you didn’t think of these ideas yourself already, then I feel brilliantly clever
