Hello,

I also have my desk in my living room. Now I would like to get a shelf, on the one hand as a visual room divider and on the other hand as additional storage space. Of course, I first looked at Ikea and there I came across the shelf EXPEDIT. In terms of dimensions, that would be exactly what I am looking for.

Now my living room has real parquet flooring, so anchoring it to the floor is not possible. Attaching it to the wall is also difficult because I have pretty wide baseboards, so the shelf would stand freely.

My concern now is that the whole thing could become a rather wobbly matter. Has anyone of you had experience with something like this?? I am grateful for any advice.

Best regards Knut

Hej,

we always have to secure these things in the store, but at home my shelves also stand away from the wall. None of them has ever fallen over. In Heerlen, the EXPEDITs will soon be on sale. I think it would be worth it from Frechen. But unfortunately, I can only tell you tomorrow how much cheaper they actually are.

groetjes,
alex

Hej Knut,

okay 100km is a bit much. With us, the shelf with 8 compartments will cost 39,- instead of 59,- euros and Saturdays are also crazy busy here. The offer will also be available in [D], but I don't know exactly when.

groetjes,
alex

There are various sources for metal parts that could be used to weigh down a shelf at the bottom. On a smaller scale, I have done this with pennies (in a Benno CD shelf) and I have also used split lead from anglers. You might consider taking a look at the iron plates used as keel weights for boats. In my opinion, they are available in 1kg pieces.

Cheap building fittings hidden in an Ikea linen box and placed in the bottom compartment don’t offer 100% security, but at least provide a reassuring feeling.

Best regards

Even if it’s repeated - for me, the Expedit shelf also stands freely in the room as a room divider. No problem at all.

The tip about weighting it down is quite good - but you can also simply pay a little attention when filling it that the very heavy books and folders or the complete edition of the [Enzyklopedia Britannica] stand on the lower shelf. Then you do have to bend down more, but it has the same effect as if you put lead or something like that in there - sometimes knowledge is even heavier... ;)
