Hello,

I am not a homeowner, but I thought if not here, where else can I get help.

We, that is my wife and my 6-month-old daughter, moved into an end terrace house two months ago. Now we have the following problem: We have very high humidity in the rooms. In the living room always about 55%, in the bedroom & office about 60-65%. We regularly ventilate with completely opened windows for about 10 minutes (shock ventilation), also cross-ventilation, but the humidity really does not decrease, only about 5%. The house is from 2000, so it should have a good thermal insulation standard. I even searched the walls for moisture with a building moisture meter; the values were between 2-5%, so that probably isn't the cause. Are the windows not sealed properly so that the same high humidity from outside is drawn into the room? In sunshine, the humidity in the room also decreases.

We previously lived in a 3-room apartment (built 1953) in Hamburg, and there we always had about 30-40% humidity, so we are somewhat puzzled.

What could be the cause of this? How can we reduce the humidity?

Thank you very much,

Martin

um, wait a moment. Please first stay calm and get informed. You have the perfect humidity. Ideal is around 50-60%.

30-40% is far too low and unhealthy. You might already start having problems with the mucous membranes.

Humidity only becomes critical at about 80% in combination with cold walls (dew point..).

So everything is great!

Yes, that is correct, but the fact that the moisture in the room does not decrease after airing is not normal. Or is it?

Your humidity is OK. How should it decrease further if the air outside is not significantly drier?

So everything is normal and good.

It depends on the temperatures inside and outside. If it is colder outside than inside, the humidity should be lower after airing than outside; if it is warmer outside, the humidity increases after airing.

On the one hand, the humidity is not concerning as it is. However, for the current season, I find it quite high. As already mentioned, the moisture inside will only be lower than outside if heating is used inside.
