So I removed the stones and reset them into the mortar bed. They really came out without any problems. Strangely, not a single crumb of mortar stuck to the stone. Everything stayed on the ring foundation. I'm glad I redid it.

That also makes me suspicious.
I think, since I did it in the height of summer, the coarse-pored stones had difficulty adhering to the mortar bed.
The moisture certainly evaporated too quickly.

I have now wetted the stones directly before setting them, also the ring foundation, and then added the mortar.
I think now a good bond to the stone should be possible.
