Halogen spots 16V or 230V?

Hello everyone,

our electrician and the drywall installer have meanwhile finished the ceiling in the living room (4.20 - 2.30 height). Incorporated into it are 68mm 20 holes for halogen spots, whereby these - as far as I could see beforehand - are powered in rows of 2,2,3,4,4 each.

Question: what kind of halogen spots should I use now (LED is out)? Behind each hole there is a box installed, into which a power supply (12V) could also fit.

You can find many arguments on the internet for 12V (more light output, last longer, no explosive exodus) and for 230V (easier to dim, less installation effort, easier to replace with LED).

I am quite helpless. Oh yes, 8 spots in the living area and 3 spots in the dining area should be dimmable.

I am currently leaning towards 230V - 35W from Osram - what do you think?!

A really good reason not to use 12V is simply the risk of short circuits! At 230V the fuse blows immediately, at 12V 99% of the power supplies on the market will burn the cable because they have no short-circuit protection. I don’t need to explain what happens then or... above all, you don’t have losses like that... Power supplies convert 230V AC to 12V DC, and they consume energy in the form of heat... the hotter such a power supply gets, the more power it consumes and more current is needed, which in turn generates more heat...

above all, the wiring for 230V is easier or just as easy.

oh yes, there are just as many 230V as 12V LED lamps...

... only that usually the power supplies have to be replaced when switching to LED. Although I would be really interested in a valid reason against LED.

Best regards

Reason against LED? Don’t know it - except if you call the higher purchase costs.
