Hello everyone,

I am asking for advice/criticism regarding the planning of a floor plan on the ground floor (see photo).
Regarding the construction project: semi-detached house, solid construction.
The picture shows an initial situation. We definitely want a free-standing island in the kitchen; furthermore, possibly an open-space concept on the ground floor. For these reasons, we would almost completely remove the wall and the associated glass door between the kitchen and hallway (marked in red).
However, the staircase remains open, and my concern is that all noises might be clearly heard upstairs.
Does anyone have practical experience with this? For these reasons, should the wall rather be left standing, or is it rather unproblematic?
Thank you very much!

Best regards
Nils

We have the stairs in the living area, just as you are planning now. We hear everything. I would never do that with children. We live as two, and if someone is watching TV downstairs, the person upstairs listens to an audiobook.

Yes, I do… in the old REH. Floor plan similar to yours: kitchen in front, open staircase near the dining area. A normal staircase opening about a meter wide and over 3 meters long didn’t bother us. Hardly anything could be heard. No TV, no property.

Plan differently, ... kitchen bottom right towards the terrace .. then a real island will also fit there.

Quiet sofa corner in the place where the kitchen is now, then the distance between sofa / TV is not so big.

Wall can stay. Because removing the wall there could also cause structural problems.

It's the same in my parents' house. I hated it :(

I would never build like that again. In fact, as already suggested, I would also swap the living room and kitchen. The living area with TV basically doesn't need much space, and I would always prefer a nice kitchen with an island and a beautiful table today.
