Hello everyone,

I wanted to ask how wide you plan/build/have built your garages and what your experiences as garage users are (that is, when you drive the car in; as a storage space, the width is secondary).
The last time I used a garage was 20 years ago; back then, it was a standard thing, 3x6m. With the Nissan Micra at that time, no problem. Even today, garages are often planned to be 3 meters wide, but somehow that seems too narrow to me, considering that cars have become wider over the past years.
I do want to be able to comfortably get in and out and, if necessary, unbuckle my children in the back and let them get out comfortably as well (although I could also do that in front of the garage if needed).
Currently, I drive a Ford S-Max, which I think is significantly wider than the Micra back then.

Thanks!!

So, if you have space, I would plan a single garage at LEAST 3.5 meters wide. Even better would be 4 meters. For comparison: standard parking spaces in parking garages usually have a width of 2.50-2.70 meters, which would be approximately the interior dimensions of a 3-meter garage. With 4 meters, you can easily open the doors on both sides and still have enough space to walk past the car.

Hello,
so our double garage will be 6.01 m x 6.01 m in interior dimensions.
Just take your car and a tape measure and measure it.
Best regards
Jochen

Of course, a wider garage is more convenient to use than a narrow one.
If you are planning two garages anyway, I would recommend a double garage without a partition wall - since it is very rare that the doors of both vehicles are opened at the same time, you always have a bit more space in the middle with these garages than with single garages.
If they should be (a) [Fertiggarage(n)], you should also consider that transport costs increase drastically with a width over 3m, as the transport then has to be accompanied by the police - in some administrative districts apparently a private security company suffices - which also costs quite a bit.
Regards,
Dirk

Thanks to you all already
I don't know yet whether it will be two single garages or one double garage. A prefabricated garage is out of the question anyway, solid construction is required.
Is it similar in price whether two singles or one double garage? I also don't know yet if we want to put both cars in the garages at all or just one (my husband has a parking heater anyway and we don't often have snow or icy temperatures).
Currently, I imagine two single garages on the right and left are nicer because of symmetry, but we are still at the very beginning and at the moment I just have a lot on my mind.

Hello,

yes, two garages - one on the right and one on the left of the house - that's exactly how it will be with us too.

However, not voluntarily, but because the property offers no other possibility.

We would have preferred a double garage, precisely because the space inside is more generous.

In terms of price, a double garage is probably cheaper than two single ones - alone because of the saved middle wall. Also lighting, drainage, and for example the gate drive are only needed once in a double garage.

In your place, if possible, I would build a second garage right away. Maybe someday you'll buy a convertible or a motorcycle, or, or, or...
