From when does it become illegal work?

Hello from the newcomer first of all,

I have a question regarding my roof. I learned roofing myself in the 90s (slate/tiles), but since the mid-90s I have not been active as a roofer because I oriented myself differently professionally back then.

Now I want to reroof my roof and would still trust myself to do 80% of the work myself and would like to get a professional for the tricky parts.

I live on a busy street and the nearest roofing supply store is practically right outside my front door. Meaning, about 10 roofers pass by my place every day.

They will surely suspect undeclared work if there is no sign on the scaffolding and then send me the friendly guys in green.

And that brings us to my question:

What would I have to do to avoid getting into trouble here? Can I even do it the way I imagine?

It would be nice if someone could give me a tip.

I hope this post is not somehow here in the forum 4 times already.
I have tried several times to write the post from the iPad but it never worked.
Now I’m trying again from the PC.

Greetings from the Frankenwald

You can do as much yourself as you feel confident to.... Anyone can suspect undeclared work... if you do everything yourself or your relatives help you, then the police can calmly drop by, although in my opinion they have nothing to say there anyway, but if then the customs office! Undeclared work is only when you have a roofer do it without a contract... which I anyway advise against, always remember a roof over your head should be watertight and you only get a warranty for officially verifiable work!

Hello,

Mistake, there is a sign at your house, namely the construction sign of the building authority; you have to get the renovation approved by your building authority. They will also explain to you in detail how you have to secure your construction site.

Otherwise, it is by no means "illegal work" if you reroof your roof yourself. If your relatives or friends help you - in addition to a professional company (even without payment) - you should register them with the BG for insurance purposes.

Kind regards

Registering with the BG is not compulsory, so it is not a must, but you are not doing yourself a favor if you don’t do it! Always expect "something" negative ... you should always keep the worst-case scenario in mind!

What exactly needs to be registered with the building authority when the roof is retiled? I have never heard of that and it is not done here with us either. As I already said, you can do everything yourself, if someone complains, no one can do anything to you in that case.

Roofing work definitely does not have to be reported or registered with the building authority. You also do not need a building permit for roofing work. Even for scaffolding work, you do not need a building permit, only if you have to set up your scaffold on the sidewalk. Anyone who claims otherwise has no idea!

But what I don't understand? You trained as a roofer and then you're afraid to cover your roof yourself? Where is the sense in that? Why should everyone driving past your house suspect undeclared work, and since when is owner-performed work considered undeclared work?

Regards Ingo
