The house where I live was built in the early 50s and since then the outdoor water tap has been located about 5 meters from the house. So it's doable. If you don’t have a well or a cistern where the water comes from, of course you have to lay a pipe into the house to eventually connect the water tap to the water pipe behind the water meter.
For this connection, it’s better to use a somewhat thicker pipe with a slope towards the house and in the basement (if you have a basement) then a ball valve with drainage so that you can shut off the water and drain the pipe in autumn.
