Floor-to-ceiling windows - frame widening with Ytong masonry?

Hello,

the architect specified the floor-to-ceiling windows with a base profile of 18 or 12 cm in his window specification. The surcharge of ~270 € per window (for 9 pieces) is quite steep though.

Couldn't the base be built with Ytong blocks?
Thermally, that should be better than such an uninsulated frame extension, right?
Do you perhaps have any other advice or ideas before I confront the architect with this?

Best regards

What exactly do you mean: a regulation-compliant threshold height against water ingress or an external overlay of the floor construction?

Hello,

I meant the transition of the floor structure.

This is done professionally using the trims. Of course, instead of this classical way (= floor-to-ceiling windows already mean a break in the exterior wall on the floor slab), the exterior wall can also be continued there and the window opening only lowered to the height of the finished floor. That would mean that it would only be advisable with a floor buildup of about 25 cm height (!) to be done with a whole layer of large block stones. The third way you suggested, to use stones of a different format (and possibly even different material) independently here, is possible - albeit unusual in my opinion. For this, aerated concrete stones are indeed particularly well suited, as they can practically be sawed to the desired matching height. The window manufacturer then saves the trim and sets the profile directly on the floor on the outside as well as inside - basically like the other windows too.
But I would rather use trims than attaching whole profiles underneath. That would be two additional frame heights (but in my opinion the price is still too steep, unless we are talking about double-wing windows).

Hello 11ant,

thank you very much for your detailed answer. I need to check whether blinds are also offered.

Yes, the 270 € would be for a two-wing window. The total additional cost for the frame extensions is 1800 €. With Ytong, it should probably be cheaper. Would that have any disadvantages, e.g. that the windows vibrate more, for example???

because of what should they "vibrate more"?
