My house is also rather small. A few more square meters here and there and a small office would be nice. I couldn’t have afforded more though. Or more precisely, only at a cost of sacrifice I was not willing to pay.
But the detached house offers more than that: the garden, the terrace. A private parking space for the vehicles.
Also distance from the neighbors. I don’t hear anything from them. After an intermezzo in a panel building, where you could acoustically participate in the neighbors’ lives, I consider that a real added value.
Besides, you are master of the decisions: how you heat or whether you install PV or a wall box – all of that is in your own hands.
Much of that is usually not offered by a rental apartment. Some of it not even by a condominium.
So even a "cramped" house can have reasons to prefer it over a rental or condo apartment.
