Hello everyone,

we have built a single-family house on the meadow of my parents-in-law and have been living here for about a year. Meanwhile, we have also made progress in garden design and have now reached the question of the fence.
Currently, there is a new development area being built directly behind our property, and three other properties border our plot.

Since we do not want/cannot wait that long for the construction phase (young dog...) to put up a fence, we actually wanted to install a chain-link fence. Now, the thing is, the costs for this should actually be shared, but I only know one property owner of the three. My question would be whether it is possibly still possible to split the costs later? Or how do I get the contact details of the property owners?

Thank you very much in advance.

Where does it say that the costs have to be shared. If you want to be on good terms, you have to pay. The other person might want to have a hedge someday.

PS: [Das Nachbarschaftsrecht ist von Bundesland zu Bundesland unterschiedlich, so dass es auf den Einzelfall ankommt.] However, it should be noted that the other properties currently seem to be undeveloped.

I am surprised about the statement regarding the [zaunkosten]. Maybe your neighbor doesn’t like a chain-link fence and wants a wooden fence...

So place one, currently you can probably determine the layout

You should also stay on your side of the boundary and, if necessary, maintain the prescribed distances. Your neighbor must first allow you to erect a fence on the boundary. I would not permit a wire mesh fence and certainly would not contribute to the cost. If you pay for the fence yourself and only set it up on your property, you can do whatever you want with the fence later. If it stands on the boundary and both pay, it belongs to both and no one may change or remove it alone.

Hi,
I guess the fence will take forever if you wait for the neighbors.
What if someone wants to build only in 5 years?
They will probably have other problems first than dealing with the fence construction now.

If you really want one now, then build a cheap temporary fence with some distance on your property.
You can always build a new nice shared fence later with the new neighbors.
Cheers, Olli

Whoever wants the fence builds it on their property (with the prescribed boundary distance and otherwise also in accordance with the local regulations) and pays ... it's as simple as that.
