The picture says: Don’t crap your pants and don’t kill your friend the tree. Look how well-behaved it stands there in the corner, many would envy you for that. A tree goes to school longer than a human. You get this protector of your climate as a gift – only a fool throws it away.

just a quick question (even if I get lynched): what actually happens to someone who completely cluelessly finishes off the tree with a chainsaw? How high could the fine be? What other sanctions could they face?

It has already been written, the fine is up to €50,000.

The administrative fine, mind you. Raising the replacement tree costs about the same again, plus the decades it takes, of course. The monetary fine is more of a symbolic embarrassment for the offender.

First the tree dies, then the human dies. And with a lot of luck, someday stupidity too.

It will do you no good to fell the tree, you will have to pay the penalty and plant a replacement tree. You will still not be allowed to build there.
