Hello dear forum,

we need to decide soon what to do with our interior walls and are still looking for experience values. We have Poroton bricks with Q2 plaster on the ground floor and drywall on the upper floor. After our first appointment with a painter, we are still a bit overwhelmed by the options - painter's fleece, patterned fleece, patterned wallpaper, woodchip wallpaper, all kinds of plaster techniques. Are there any experiences here regarding how durable it is? We have two kindergarten-aged children and sometimes a stick brushes along the wall or the wall gets pens, sauce, etc. on it. Ideally, our wall should be able to forgive something like that. What experiences have you had? What do you find good or bad about your choice for the interior walls?

Thanks in advance for the input.

Best regards
Mr. Stein

It's all a matter of taste. However, only a concrete wall will truly forgive this. All other materials will more or less "suffer" the same. I have three kids myself and experience with roughcast, painter's fleece, and just plastered + painted walls. At some point, just repaint and it’s fine. If you always want beautiful walls, you’ll have to send your kids to a year-round boarding school now.

I would like to join in on the question. I am also completely overwhelmed with a choice right now. However, I am quite sure that I do not want to spend the money on the painter. We are not too picky when it comes to the walls. I trust myself/us to wallpaper if the professional is too expensive. We also have a child who will be about 1 year old at the time of moving in, so I don't want to spend too much money on walls that might be at risk for a toddler. The general contractor will hand over the house interior plastered to Q2 standard. From what we have seen so far (at friends), not bad at all for Q2. Can I simply wallpaper over it with fleece wallpaper? Or will that not hold? Or do I need primer? I have now ordered a basic DIY book from "selbst ist der Mann" (hehe). But I would prefer something more specific on interior construction, unfortunately I couldn't find anything. Are there any good book recommendations?

From what we have found out about the topic, that does not sound like a good idea. According to the painter, the wall needs to be "smooth" for a non-woven wallpaper. So Q3 instead of Q2. Otherwise, you can see big bumps because of tiny unevenness. Then getting the transitions between the strips so that you don’t see them. I wouldn’t trust myself to do that. Classic woodchip wallpaper is not quite as demanding regarding the wall. We have given up on plaster inside. It always scratches and can sometimes cause scratches on the little ones...
