We wanted to hang the Billy wall shelf and failed because of the screws.

Has anyone already hung it up and has experience with screws? Since only two mounting brackets are provided, I wonder what screw thickness/diameter will actually hold it stably? We only had 8mm anchors and 6x70mm screws left, and since it was Saturday evening, we gave up because it seemed very shaky to me. For example, the lacquered shelf was mounted with five 8mm anchors with corresponding screws and is much lighter.

I would be very grateful for tips or experience reports.

Hi,

at Ikea, screws or plugs for hanging are almost never included. You have to go to the hardware store and ask a salesperson which plug and screw are suitable for your wall. Because IKEA obviously doesn’t know whether you have a concrete, plaster, clay wall or a brick wall.

Just tell the employee at the hardware store how much weight you want to hang on it, and everything will hold perfectly safe!!

yes, thanks! - I was already there anyway, (Baumarkt), in the end it was exactly these dowels and screws that we had already had in mind, but I still don't quite trust the whole thing...

Hi,

I am also struggling to securely and reliably mount the Billy wall shelf to an old building wall (red brick). Since the outer layer of the wall is quite porous, the high weight of the shelf (16kg) causes the holes behind the three glass doors to keep tearing downward. I have now used 2x size 10 screws and special heavy-duty anchors, but the left hole still doesn’t seem to hold properly; the wall shelf has already tilted about 2-3mm away from the wall at the top edge again. Since we sit at the table underneath, this feels too dangerous to me. It is loaded with plates, a maximum of 10kg additional weight.

Basically, I find the mounting with only 2 brackets on the outer edges somewhat daring. Therefore, I will now fix two long size 10 screws with brackets on the left and right in the middle interior compartment. If that doesn’t hold, it’s going in the trash.

Does anyone else have experience with old masonry and the Billy wall shelf? The shelf itself is not at fault for the wall condition, but overall it is by no means as stable and secure as it appears at first glance.

Hello, for such cases there are wall plugs filled with synthetic resin and a new hole is drilled in them, available in every better hardware store
