Honestly, who wants to have their entire garden exclusively as a vegetable garden for the first few years? Most people would like to have lawn areas and their hedges and flower beds. That’s basically true, but for most people, it’s not really an option.

We tilled the weed layer to disrupt the growth a bit and then put soil on top. Since we piled about a meter of soil on some parts, I hope that the crap underneath simply suffocates. We are still leveling and spreading. When that’s finished, we will wait for it to settle over the winter and then level it again and loosen it with the tiller.

I really think it's awful that glyphosates are recommended here... nobody wants that in the field, but then distribute it in the private garden? I don't have a practical tip yet - we will also have a very wet garden, but first I'll see what grows on its own, and what I want from that and what not.

I think this idea is brilliant.. (and hope that it actually works)

You lay out newspaper sheets closely together in the overgrown garden, then a layer of mulch on top. The newspaper is supposed to prevent the weeds from growing. Nowadays, no toxic printer ink is used anymore, so that is not a problem.

We want to try it out soon.

Best regards, Steffi.
