Cost of a subsequent roof window

I find it difficult to assess without further information.

Initial assessment from a distance: Have it done immediately! Windows of the appropriate size that are approved as a second means of escape (or is the existing window large enough?) are expensive. Depending on the width between the rafters, a header beam may need to be installed, insulation must then be adjusted, and drywall work done; the windows themselves are also costly because they must have a certain opening angle.

In the subsequently converted attic, we would actually also need windows of the appropriate size and characteristics for the second means of escape. I estimate about €3000. Our three existing roof windows do not meet the required criteria.

However, a roller shutter is included in the €3000. But no roller shutters are out of the question for us, because otherwise it’s unbearable in summer.

I would definitely have the option for the possible window included now. Later, the window can always be retrofitted more easily.

A roof window measuring 110x140cm cost us 1,984 euros. The surcharge from 78x140cm to our chosen size was 248 euros.

For comparison: we had an old window construction removed and replaced with two Velux windows with triple glazing. Including solar shutters. The window area was roughly halved, so the roof had to be re-covered with existing tiles and insulated. In addition, there was the lightweight construction without painting work on the roof slope.
