Hello dear renovation idea experts,

we have a large wooden-glass conservatory. Photos attached/below.

It should be converted into a "fully enclosed" space. So closed surfaces/walls, few windows, with a closed roof at the top.

I had an architect who had an idea of how to solve this "very simply" using the existing structure. Unfortunately, he got lost to me due to another major project before he could finalize it.

Does anyone have an idea how this could be done "simply"? Without tearing everything down, then rebuilding and masonry, along with a new roof construction?

I’m curious and thankful for any ideas!

What does the roof construction look like? Wood? Dimensions and spacing of the beams? Width and length of the [Wintergarten]? Should the roof pitch be maintained?

What does the building authority say about this? [Wintergarten] is often exempt from building permits. An extension in my opinion is not.

Yes, the ceiling construction is also made of wood. Beam spacing approximately 1m each. The roof pitch should be maintained. Area: length 11m, width 2.5m. The project will later be included directly in the building application due to a different inquiry.

I was thinking about removing the glass from the roof, putting OSB boards on, diffuser foil/tar paper on top, aluminum panel with insulation (sandwich panels) on top, insulating in between underneath, then vapor barrier and drywall below, possibly adding 2 supports/wooden beams additionally at the house wall. (Did I forget something?) Could this be done this way? (Probably a structural engineer should take a look just to be safe.)

But how do you solve it with the side fronts? Leave the old construction standing and build a new wooden construction in between? Best to ask a carpenter overall? And how do you achieve good insulation values? Just like this? So many questions....

I would also have executed the windows where the wall is supposed to be with timber frame construction with insulation. Outside cross battens and insulation.

With 1 m spacing, the OSB would be somewhat difficult. One could use the cross battens for the insulation on top as a supporting element for the OSB. Roof insulation?

Gypsum board probably does not work with 1 m spacing of the beams either.

Do the roof beams have visible quality?

Thank you very much, the cross battens on the roof outside and inside are a SUPER tip! Support beams have a visible quality, but to me that is too rustic, so I prefer the gypsum boards underneath. But with your tip I can cover both sides without any problems. Yes, it is always the little things that lead to success or failure. Thank you.

Would the new timber frame construction of the window wall be more the work of a carpenter or a joiner?

In my opinion, rather carpenters.

Holzstaender is also something for DIY.

I have a visible wooden beam ceiling with plasterboard on top. Looks great.

Which windows exactly do you want to remove?
