We are currently searching for a house and have now found an interesting property. We really like the location and the price, and the house is generally very well maintained. The problem, however, is the heating, as there are only night storage heaters from the early 2000s installed.

Since the interior rooms are very well maintained and renovated, installing heating pipes is out of the question; after all, we don’t want to break everything open or end up with a shell again.

The house, a bungalow, has 185 sqm of living space, and except for the kitchen and bathroom, laminate flooring is laid everywhere. No basement.

What options are there for modernizing the heating system and with what costs should we expect to calculate? Since we have no experience with such things, it is difficult to estimate what additional costs we might face and whether the purchase would really be worthwhile.

We also definitely plan to install a photovoltaic system, if that helps.

Hi,
Are storage heaters as pure electric heating not even desired again? There’s not much alternative left. Split air conditioners would work, but none of this is silent and the floors remain cold.
Are the walls properly insulated? Then something like that can definitely work, otherwise, insulate first, then take it from there...

Best regards,
Andreas

We face the same question and are now considering infrared. From what I read, the operating costs are indeed high but the purchase price is affordable. In addition, there is immediate heat at the push of a button. Overall, a good option for us.

Our storage heaters probably have even worse efficiency, so we are basing it on the previous prices and hoping for some improvement.

I have already looked into IR heating as well, but when I read that a single-family house then has heating costs of over €10,000 per year, that is an absolute no-go.

A photovoltaic system with storage would certainly cushion that, but especially in winter, when you need the heating, a photovoltaic SYSTEM produces less.

A air heating system in the attic with ventilation ducts like in the USA could possibly be suitable. That means, for example, also a heat pump, which works well with photovoltaic. But it also depends on how well insulated it is.

How is the hot water preparation in the house?
