Good day,

I have not found a concrete answer on the internet, so here is the question.
Is it allowed to connect new pipes to old lead pipes?

I understand that lead pipes should be replaced, etc. But it is about a guest bathroom in my grandmother’s house. It is used very rarely, and it is not worth laying new pipes until then.

After a small modernization of other pipes, the plumber said that according to the law, no new pipes may be connected to old lead pipes.

Best regards, Stephan

Hi,

I learned gas, water, plumb... about 40 years ago, but did something else afterwards. Back then it was still common to solder CU pipes with lead pipes during renovations. The only important thing is the sequence in the direction of flow. Lead before copper is not a problem; the other way around, the "base" pipes would dissolve, keyword "electrochemical series". However, this is also relative, since the old pipes are usually so heavily scaled that there is no contact with the bare metal. For the same reason, I wouldn't worry too much about possible lead contamination in the water. The only important thing here is that the water doesn’t "stand" in the pipes for long, so flush regularly or don’t use the first liters.

Unfortunately, I can’t say anything about the legal requirements, but the limit values must be met. But who checks that?

But if it’s manageable in terms of effort, I would replace all the pipes in the house.

Regards Olli
