Hello,

Maybe you can help me.

Our concrete staircase is enclosed by 2 walls, it will get wooden treads 4cm thick and risers 2cm thick.

1. Problem

The walls are not the same length. One wall is shorter. But you could make it equal to the other wall by using 2 drywall panels.

2. Problem

Here the walls would also be too short. The lowest tread sticks out. Shortening is not possible because of the riser.

Stair builder's idea:

Simply pull out the lowest tread a bit and make it wider, so it would be in front of the two walls.

I don't really like that.

Couldn't you just attach a drywall panel to the concrete at the bottom instead of a riser, plaster it... that way you could shorten the tread too... or maybe you have an idea.

Attached is a picture of the problem and how I actually always wanted it.

Okay, the dumb bar stool with the flowerpot is not a real beauty and I would simply leave it out, but: who except a diploma millimeter man sees a "problem" here?

Then don't write anything at all. Whether you see a problem or consider it marginal was not the question. The question was about solutions. Besides, if I order a car in red, I expect it to be red and not blue.

Google tolerances in construction.

I am aware that there are tolerances in construction. I also wouldn’t ask if there were 6 instead of 4 cm left at the first step. But the fact is that the wall is too short and the first step protrudes. That then has nothing to do with tolerance. I do have a solution variant. I thought maybe further ideas would be provided here. If that is not the case, okay… but no one should come to me now with tolerances. Then just don’t write anything.

Bad sleep?

So you want the first step to align exactly with the walls. The only thing I can think of would be to shorten the first tread after all and either omit the first riser and simply fill and paint it white, then continue the planned skirting board there. Or to make the first tread much thinner, basically like a kind of shell or even veneer. But then the first tread is shorter than all the others. You have to consider whether it’s worth it to you. I actually think the idea of your wood guy is the best. You see that quite often.
