Hello everyone,
I am new here and I have a question right away.
I have an exposed beam ceiling and would like to cover it so that there is a flat or even ceiling.
How can I best do this, what options do I have?
I have uploaded a picture of what my ceiling looks like.
Thanks in advance for the answers.

Hello, the cheapest option would be to attach drywall sheets, putty, prime, and then wallpaper or paint. Since I don't know the measurements and you also can't see if the beams are all lying straight, you might have to batten them first. Regards Thommi

Hello Lox,

why do you want to cover such a beautiful ceiling???

There are many possibilities, but first of all, it depends on what you want to do with the ceiling later.

You will not get around installing battens, because the rafter spacing is certainly too large.

So you first have to attach battens that straighten the ceiling, you can screw these onto the existing rafters. To level them, you have to set the battens horizontally; for this, you can use special screws with which you can compensate for unevenness by screwing them in or out, or the more laborious but cheaper method using washers of different thicknesses. The spacing of the battens should be as small as possible, definitely no more than 60 cm, of course depending on what you want to put on it later. There are various options for this, plasterboard sheets (not too thin or doubled), then wallpaper or similar, or you make a panel ceiling or other sheet material, as I said, it depends on what you want to do.

You should possibly also pay attention to a vapor barrier, which again depends on the local conditions.

Hello, thank you for the answers.

I have a fireplace in the living room, if I now install the drywall panels, how is it with the heat from the fireplace? Can the drywall panels be damaged by it?

Hello,
there are special plates for that which are slightly red. But I think if your beams have not caught fire until now, it probably won't happen with plates either. Maybe ask the chimney sweep again!
